Restructuring of the Executive Committee
The BSL Executive Committee gave overwhelming approval to restructure the League's governing bodies at its November 7th meeting. Here are some of the highlights of the proposed changes:
- Create a 14-member Board of Directors that will meet monthly and make most decisions for the League. This Board will consist of the 6 League officers and 2 representatives from each division. There are many reasons for this suggested change, but the summary is the current 35-member decision-making group was in many ways bloated and ineffective.
- The Board of Directors will not use Roberts Rules of Order and instead will use a consensus style of meeting management.
- The current 35-member Executive Committee will meet a minimum of twice a year and can be called for additional meetings to meet to assist or review decisions of the Board of Directors.
- All of the details are not complete, but the vast majority felt this is an important enough improvement to proceed with the idea that mid-course corrections will be part of the implementation.
We expect that this change to the governance model that the League has used for over 30 years will prompt some questions. We're committed to helping our members understand the changes and the expected benefits.
Questions & Answers
Why is this change being suggested?
The idea that the Executive Committee was too large and meetings were in many ways a waste of time was floated about 3 years ago. At that time, there were 24 members. It has since grown to 35 members. Roberts Rules are used to regulate the Executive Committee meetings.
We started work by looking at how other NAGAAA leagues and other sports organizations in Boston are organized but also made suggestions that build on our strengths. This model is designed to focus on league needs as opposed to team interests but also provide representation from all parts of the league.
How will division reps be elected?
Early next year, after new teams have been approved and divisions identified, teams will caucus by division and select 2 representatives plus alternates.
What needs to be done to make this official and how soon will it occur?
The League Governance Committee is reviewing and rewriting our Constitution and By-Laws to make the suggested changes. A vote of the league membership is required to approve the changes and put them into effect. The meeting will occur in late-January or February.
